Wrapping up 2020

Congratulations! You have survived the craziest 365 days of your life. Throughout most of the year, many of us were trapped at home and practically lived online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone had been stressed out, and most people forgot many of the events that also took place last year.

Kobe Bryant was a professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years. On Jan. 26, 2020, Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven lives were taken in a helicopter crash at 10 a.m. in Calabasas, California. They were on their way to the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California for a basketball event. Kobe Bryant's death impacted many people, including West basketball Coach Mac Donald.

Mac Donald explains how much Kobe Bryant has influenced his life. “Kobe is one of the greatest examples of what a human being should aim to be: his drive, passion, commitment and love for not only basketball but everything in life,” he further stated. “Heroes are always remembered, but legends never die.”

Murder Hornets were first spotted in Washington State in December of 2019, but actions were not taken place to warn beekeepers until April of 2020. The Asian Giant Hornet, also commonly known as “Murder Hornets”, are the largest hornet in the world. The Murder Hornets attack honeybee hives, kill all the adult bees and devour defenseless larvae. Scientists state that only two stings from the hornet can be fatal.

Many horrible events have happened over the course of 2020, but many good things have happened as well. For example, people found ways to stay connected with family and friends throughout a global pandemic, the oceans became cleaner and the COVID-19 vaccine was released!

There are two main vaccines that have been developed to fight the spread of COVID-19, those being the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine. Both vaccines require two doses taken over the course of a little over a month and have a 95% effectiveness. Doctors, nurses and front-line workers all around the world have recently taken the vaccine as a safety precaution, so they can safely do their job. Moderna has recently been released to the public. Unfortunately, to get a vaccine administered to you, your age must be taken into account. For Moderna you must be 18 or older to receive the vaccine, while with Pfizer you must be at least 16 to receive the vaccine.

From Murder Hornets making their way over to the United States to the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, people have managed to survive the most hectic year of their lives. Thankfully, some people made it through 2020 while remaining connected with their loved ones, as well as learning how to make the most out of any situation thrown Earth’s way.
